So @Hotmail Sent Me a Tweet…

It was in reference to my story on the new Gmail Preview Pane feature.

So, two thoughts here:

1) You caught my attention, Microsoft. Good job to your Hotmail social media team.

2) But even if you have a feature first Microsoft, it doesn’t mean your product is better or will be more successful. Just look at Zune wireless sync. You had it first, but that didn’t stop the iPod from kicking your ass, did it? Thought so.

Addition: Hotmail is a good product. Is it better than Gmail? Not in my opinion, but to each his or her own.

  1. Since you’ve opened up this issue for comment:

I can respect owning up to your mistake (we all make them) but was the second point really necessary? C’mon, man, you’re better than that.

    1. Agreed.  I don’t even get the point.  Apple (and its various iDevices) had a larger lead time to establish a market presence than the Zune.  What good is a fancy new feature or two when your competitor controls the market?

  2. And Eudora had preview pane in 1996.  Windows 3.11 had 140 character communication mechanism over network called “net send”, in 93. Yet Microsoft is using Twitter.

Microsoft is still living in the 80s. Thinking in terms of  features listed in documents with tiny checklists on each.

Another example: Windows Mobile had all the features iOS or Android has in 2004. It is not the checklists that make your product good. It is making those features usable.

Of course, given how gullible media industry is, it doesn’t matter.
